Taksim Trio

Taksim Trio

It’s impossible to overstate this - Istanbul is one of the richest musical hinterlands of our times. At the cross-road between eastern and western traditions, Turkey has succeeded in preserving its roots without shutting off outside influences, past and present. The three virtuosos brought together here, schooled in gypsy culture, are naturally open to horizons beyond those of the Bosporus. Even as teenagers their careers took them on fascinating journeys.

Having been at the heart of the Okay Temix orchestra, Hüsnü Senlendirici is today considered a god of the clarinet in Turkey, having founded the gypsy jazz group Laço Tayfa. Aytaç Dogan is the darling ganun player of the Arba Emirates, but he doesn’t hesitate to delve into jazz, blues and Latin music. Ismail Tunçbilek has brought the magic of the baglma lute far beyond his home country, working with master musicians from Egypt and Spain, including Paco de Lucia.

This album is more than the sum of its parts, it transcend the influences and experiences of the individuals involved. Their virtuosity doesn’t express itself through overblown solos, but plays on silence and subtlety, resting on a mutual attentiveness to each other. With an unbounded lightness of touch, through their improvisations (taksims), they rewrite the rules, twist genres and release a sound of incredible clarity.
